Paolo Palma

Paolo Palma was born in 1973. He graduated at the ISIA (Higher Institute for Artistic Industries) in Urbino, Italy. In 1999, after working with the Dolcini Associati studio in Pesaro for two years, he joined Fabrica, the Benetton group’s communication research centre, with which he still works today as a consultant. He was co-founder of Heads Collective where he worked as Art Director until 2013. Since 2011 Paolo is professor of graphic design at the ISIA in Urbino. In 2014 he started "Metodo" a studio that deals with communication design.

He has developed and curated the artistic direction of cultural events including: “Nuvolari (tra la terra e il cielo)”, “Fabrica Forever Rotterdam”, “XYZ Ideas on furniture”, “Colors extra/ordinary objects”, “I Della Robbia. Il dialogo delle arti nel Rinascimento”, “Andrea Brustolon”, “Lo stile dello Zar”, Claudio Buziol Foundation, “Treviso Design”, “Sustain/ability”, Medici con l’Africa Cuamm, Case Museo Milano, “Musica nel sangue”, Avis, HydroCobweb by Replay, “Future Pass Asia to the world”, “Verona Reload”, and Francesco Fabbri Foundation.

 

Among his editorial projects are: Hendrix Now, Parade-Parades, L'avventura continua. Storia breve dei primi 60 anni di Medici con l'Africa Cuamm, Colors Magazine n. 65, 66, 67; Colors Music, Mail Me (Electa), Fab Newsletter, The art of experimental interaction design (IdN), D&AD annual 2007 (D&AD).

 

Among his commercial projects are: Società Autostrade, Autogrill, Diadora, Kronos, ZeroRh+, United Colors of Benetton, Ikepod, Bd Barcelona Design, Curvet Ambienti, Oviesse, Bata, ACTV, Porta Vescovo Dolomiti Resort, Vic Matié, Unlimited, Il Gufo.

 

His works have been published in various specialized magazines including Print, Novum, Linea Grafica, Output, Ètapes, Diseño Grafico, Domus, Experimenta, Modo, Interni, Abitare, Colors, El Pais and IDEA.

As well as his personal exhibition; Paradise: Image and Type by Paolo Palma (Bologna, 2001) he has taken part in the following exhibitions: “Design is Everything” (Madrid 2010), Festival international de l’affiche et du graphisme deby the ADI design Index as one of the year’s best projects. Chaumont (Chaumont 2010), Segni diversi (Caorle 2009), Centre Pompidou / Parigi Fabrica: Les yeux ouverts (Parigi 2006), Segni diversi (Caorle 2009), Le Reliquie di Sottosp irito (Milano 2006), I Designer delle Marche (Milan, Ancona, 2005), Teach me (Venice, 2004), Sense of Wonder, Chi ha paura…? (Milan, 2002), Italic 1.0 (Rome, 2002), Bold: Nuovi Grafici Italiani (Venice, 2002).

 

He has edited a book on the typographical work of Wim Crouwel: New Alphabet. Wim Crouwel e la tipografia sperimentale, which was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the International TypoGraphi Awards in 2004. He contributed to the volume The Origins of Things: Sketches, Models, Prototypes by Thimo Te Duits, (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen/NAi Publishers, Rotterdam 2003). In 2005 he developed the project on experimental typography Ortho-type that was recognized by the ADI design Index as one of the year’s best projects. He is particularly interested in typographical experimentation.
